A Reader's Adventure

A book blogger at A Reader's Adventure.

Hourglass - Myra McEntire First of all let me just say that if you are anti-paranormal you should still read this book, its more sci-fi than anything else. She sees ghosts but that's not the whole story.Ok, this book was amazing!!!! It was the best of all worlds. Not too much romance to bore/annoy, but enough to keep you invested in their relationship, Not too science fictiony so if you are scared of that aspect there is no need! (Though the science geek in me wishes there was a little more…) Anyway the plot was beautifully thought through (if a teeny bit slow at times) and finally the characters were absolutely AMAZING!My favorite part of this book, was all of the twists and turns. Nothing is sure, so much so that I found myself wondering with Emerson exactly what was going on and who to trust. I love when books can draw me in like that!!I liked Emerson’s spunk! She was totally my type of protagonist. She didn’t just take things sitting down. And hated being pushed around for various reasons. I loved her!The one thing I was different was the ending. It was kind of annoying and I wish it had been more drawn out. We spent the whole book waiting for this part, and then it was over. But overall a really good debut and a good change from many books today!(Also that cover? Genius!)
Starcrossed - Josephine Angelini If you’ve read this blog for any length of time you know I love Greek mythology! And while this is not directly mythology, there are currents of it throughout the entire plot. The first thing I loved about this book was the love story. It was not your typical paranormal YA love story and I really appreciated that. It like REAL relationships took some time to develop (i.e. it wasn’t instantaneous or a love triangle) so I really liked that. Another thing I really liked were all the characters. Not just the main ones but almost EVERY character introduced was important in some way. They didn’t just disappear or exist just to move one small part of the plot along. I especially liked all of the Delos family. Each one had an important role and very different personalities. This book was filled with twists and turns, red herrings, and “wow I never would have guessed” moments! All these things kept me interested and hooked for the entire book! A good read and an amazing debut!

A Long, Long Sleep

A Long, Long Sleep - Anna Sheehan This book was a blend of science fiction and dystopian. It was a pleasant combination that made this book unique.Anna Sheehan created a book that combined mystery, romance, and intrigue. But even within that there was an underlying thread of abuse. It was a different kind of abuse that was not obvious at the beginning to anyone but it was totally there. It killed me to read about this abuse, especially because I know that there is similar types of abuse everyday and there is no way to prove it. Just like in this novel.Even with the abuse this book was not completely sad and depressing it was a story about the path of reconstructing what happened in Rose’s past and learning to move past it no matter how hard it might be. Rose was an interesting protagonist. She was down on herself like many other main characters in YA literature today, but it was different. Once the story started to come out her self deprecation was understandable and she eventually developed into a strong character. I liked that because it made her seem more real, her having a reason for the way she felt about herself and the way she thought herself to be perceived. There were many red herrings in this book. I never knew who the bad people were till the end and there is a surprise at the end of the book that I never expected in a million years. It brought me to tears a couple of times. As you can tell I loved this book. It had strong characters, a strong message, and a strong plot that twisted and turned. While the ending may not be what you would love for it to be. I was satisfied with it, I think it was the perfect ending to a very diverse book. A must read!

Enclave (Razorland Series #1)

Enclave (Razorland Series #1) - There were aspects of this book that I loved as well as aspects that really bugged me. I loved the main character! She was spicy and amazing, very similar to Katniss from the Hunger Games and Katsa from Graceling. She was strong, and not willing to let people walk all over her. I also liked the overall plot, and I enjoyed the way that their “jobs” were chosen. I felt that the going out into the tunnels outside of the enclaves. It was similar to The Maze Runner by James Dashner in that aspect.Things that I didn’t like: the very, very odd love triangle. The way the story kind of stopped I think it would have been better if the book was longer because it seemed like the entire book was just a set up for the next books. And while I got somewhat connected I wish the next book was connected to this book so there would be some more story line.Overall an ok book and I’m still interested in reading the next book, to see what happens next.
Unearthly - Cynthia Hand I have not traditionally been a big angel fan. All the angel books I have read were too “unearthly.” This was not the case with Unearthly, Clara was a real girl who happened to be part angel.I liked that Clara knew that she was an angel because it made the story less “oh look what I can do” and more about her journey. I really liked the variety of characters in this book, and the real way that Clara interacted with them. Especially her relationship with her mom, it was a fresh breath of air to find a character who did not hate her mom 100% of the time, and to find a mom that for the most part was in the story. Even though sometimes she was kind of AWOL.The one thing that I absolutely loved about this book was the slow growing relationships. During the relationship that was important it was a slow love not just ‘ooh a boy, I love him!” I liked the way it developed and was not just instantaneous as it is in many other books. The ending was very unexpected, while I did kind of guess at one of the things, many of the twists were completely unexpected. Hopefully there is going to be another book because with that ending it needs one! This book was beautifully written, and the characters and relationships were relatable. A fabulous Debut!
My Unfair Godmother - Janette Rallison I loved My Fair Godmother and all of Janette’s books are hilarious and fun filled! So I was super excited to read this follow-up!I liked My Unfair Godmother even more than the first book! Chrissy was back and in full force, “trying” to do good but just causing more chaos. I definitely liked Tansy as a character, while whiny she was filled with spunk and was very relatable. Her non Chrissy caused problems were things that many teens deal with everyday. One of the things I love about these books are the fairy tale retellings. There are a huge variety of stories retold in this one book but they all seem to fall into place. From Robin Hood to Rumpelstiltskin, each story brings even more hilarity to the scene.I enjoyed Tansy and Hudson's relationship so well, especially how it went from the police station and grew into so much more. There were a couple issues between Tansy and her father that I wish had been dealt with a little more but the story did not lose anything from that not being dealt with.Overall this was another great book by Janette!
Amy and Roger's Epic Detour - Morgan Matson So who loves a good road trip book? Raise your hands... yes I see you, well I love road trip books, maybe because I have never been on a road trip. But Amy and Roger's Epic Detour was a honest to goodness genuine road trip book, where they go harem scarem wherever sounds interesting.Ok, so maybe I especially loved this book because it was a road trip book, but I also loved the motives for going on the road trip and why they went where they went. Also there were lists and receipts throughout the book which added to the reality factor of actually being on the trip with Amy and Roger. While neither of them at the beginning have any goal but to get to Connecticut, the story blossoms into a story of self-discovery and forgiveness, as well as moving on and not letting the past destroy your life. Amy and Roger's relationship was cool and they acted like two people who did not really know each other would act when stuffed into a car alone. I really enjoyed their banter and dialogue. One small problem I had with the book was that the middle was kind of slow, but overall it was a fabulous book!Do you want to win a copy of this book? Rules of Attraction

Rules of Attraction - Simone Elkeles I loved Perfect Chemistry, and after reading it I found myself wishing for sequels, so when I heard about this book and that there is going to be another book, I was so excited!Rules of Attraction was very similar in plot to Perfect Chemistry, gang member boy, gets connected to a white girl, but I really enjoyed the differences in this one, for example I like how Carlos had to live with Kiara, which added a new and different element of conflict to the story. I also loved reading more about Alex and Brittney!Kiara was more feisty than Brittney which I enjoyed, she was really smart and lovable. I also really loved the epilogue. This book was really cute and I liked the two different point of views, I cannot wait for the next book.

Mockingbird

Mockingbird - Kathryn Erskine I received this book from Around The World Tours and forgot about it. Then Cindy asked me if I had sent it and I was not sure what she meant, then I looked around and there it was sitting on the table. I told her I would send it promptly the next morning. I then picked up the book to try and read it before the next morning thinking it was going to be a struggle. I completely fell into this book. Caitlin's child-like innocence was increased by her battle with Asperger's so when her brother dies she has no real idea what is going on.Kathryn created a story that touches so many different emotions. I felt genuinely sad for Caitlin and her father's loss and Caitlin's need to make her father feel better and have "closure". This book deals with more than Asperger's it deals with something we all inherently feel whether we admit it or not.So poignant and touching! It made me cry.

Zan-Gah: A Prehistoric Adventure

Zan-Gah: A Prehistoric Adventure - Allan Richard Shickman This book has a very interesting premise. I mean who doesn't want to read about prehistoric people? This book was really interesting. The style o writing was different from any other book I have ever read and was kind of hard to read in the beginning but once I got into it, it was an interesting way to tell a story. In this book we travel with Zan-Gah and learn about the world he lives in. It was really cool to imagine how the world would have been that long ago. It was also cool to see him discover new innovations throughout the novel. One of the small problems I had with this book was the fact that it was hard for me to get into. But once I got into it, it really surprised me. There is also a sequel which I am going to be reviewing soon, so look out for that.Definitely an interesting book that would be great for boys middle grade and up!

Shadow

Shadow - Jenny Moss I was expecting a lot more from this book, based on the synopsis. More adventure and even more intrigue. But I was sadly disappointed, the book was confusing and I really did not understand what was going on until like 40 pages into the book.Ok, so it was not all bad, once I got into it, it was pretty good, but a little boring. I felt like the plot kept jumping around, and that the characters were disconnected. And while the ending was complete I wish it had been more spontaneous. I have to say the ending of the book was my favorite part of the book.Shadow was an interesting character who was just trying to find herself. I wish the rest of the book could have been as interesting as her. I do have to say that, it was an interesting premise, I just wish it had been executed in a different way.

Raised by Wolves (Raised by Wolves Novel)

Raised by Wolves - Jennifer Lynn Barnes I really liked this new take on Werewolves, it is really cool to see a different view of the werewolf life, becasue werewolves are becoming a very common paranormal theme.Ok, first of all I absolutely love the nickname Bryn! It is fun and sassy, which totally fits the character. This book was hilarious, the part that was funny was the great dialogue, and characters, becasue this was not a comedic book but I still loves the interactions between the characters, especially between Bryn and Devon. But while this book had great dialogue there were deep emotional connections throughout the novel.Bryn was an awesome character she was the quintessential girl power character and she grew tremendously throughout the novel, she went from a girl who while being rebellious, basically did all she was supposed to do, to a strong young woman who is determined to do what she thinks is right no matter the consequences. An amazing book! Barnes created amazing characters and a great storyline. I am definitely going to pick up some of her other books after this!
Fire Will Fall - Carol Plum-Ucci Let me first say that I want to be a Biomedical Engineer when I grow up so I was really excited to read this book, I had not read the first book but I figured it would be ok, and I could catch up as I went along. While I was able to understand what was going on for the most part, I was really, really board.I am not sure whether the first book was more interesting, but this book had too much whining for me, and even though I came to care about the characters, I could not really get into it. Maybe I will try again after reading the first book. If I change my mind I will be sure to let you guys know.

My Double Life

My Double Life - Janette Rallison Janette Rallison writes really cute books. But I have to say that this was not my favorite of hers. While I enjoyed the fact that there was less fluff in this novel, Kari annoyed me to no end. Annoying characters totally get on my nerves. But Kari took basically no actual responsibility for her actions which got on my nerves.I liked how Rallison dealt more with harder issues than in her previous novels, and I enjoyed the overall novel if not specific characters and situation. So I enjoyed the novel but one of the characters annoyed me.

Swoon at Your Own Risk

Swoon at Your Own Risk - Sydney Salter This book was really cute! It made me long for lazy summer days, and summer romance. This was a really fluffy novel with deeper plot lines than are made obvious when you first pick up the book.Polly was your typical teenage girl trying to find herself. She had become such a hodgepodge of different interests from all of the guys she had dated. This book was about her finding new love and learning not to compromise herself. Polly's grandma (Miss Swoon) was really funny and made me wish I had a grandma like that. (minus all the men) I also liked how all of Polly's previous boyfriends all had very different interests and personality. I did not get confused about who was who which I was afraid of. I also loved Xander he was by far my favorite part of the novel! On another note I felt that this book was very stereotypical and I found myself wishing for a few more characters who were less stereotypical. But besides that I really enjoyed this book and it makes me want to pick up Sydney's first book My Big Nose and Other Natural Disasters. I hope to read more by Sydney in the future!
Anxious Hearts - Tucker Shaw This was a very interesting story. It was told from two perspectives one, Eva from the present time and two, Gabriel from the poem. It was interesting because the stories were not intertwined but they were similar so it was cool to see two different perspectives on undying love. But it was slightly confusing in the very beginning, but then I got used to the way the book flowed.Eva and Gabe's story was more relate able I guess because it took place in present time, and had relate able family relationships and cultural understandings. I also liked how Eva dealt with the situations put in front of her, she dealt with the problems in realistic and believable ways.Evangeline and Gabriel's story was a little harder to follow, and I did not like it as much, but it was still very touching and interesting.I liked the way that Eva and Gabe's story was told from Eva's side, and how Evangeline and Gabriel's story was told by Gabriel. I liked that contrast between the two stories.Pros * 2 different stories * different narrator for each story * different premiseCons * Format was hard to get into in the beginning * The middle of the stories were slow * Somewhat hard to follow at timesOverall I liked the book but I wish it had flowed better at times!
